Golden Jubilee Memorial Lecture Series- 4

Loyola Golden Jubilee Memorial Lecture, 2019, on the theme ‘Challenges of Democracy in Contemporary India’, was delivered by Sri Sitaram Yechury, Veteran Parliamentarian and General Secretary, Communist Party of India (Marxist) on 18/02/2020 in the Sutter Hall. The function was attended by a large number of participants from different sections of the society, including students, scholars and political activists in and around Trivandrum. Highlight of the event was the presence of a large contingent of people from the visual and print media. 

Mr Yechury, launched a scathing attack on the ruling political party for its failure to address the fundamental social and economic issues concerning the ordinary people of India. He said, the actions of the present leadership are aimed at the elimination of the poor and not the elimination of poverty. He raised concerns over the way in which the constitutional values are undermined in contemporary India and criticized the ruling party and their communal ideology as primarily responsible for such a state of affairs. Sri. Yechury, emphasized on the need to safeguard the democratic institutions, and the civil social spaces, such as universities and colleges to ensure the practice of Democracy in India.
