About Programme

Established in 2020, the Department of Disaster Management aims to meet the growing need for young professionals equipped with knowledge, skills and values to address the increasing incidence of disasters across the world. The MSW in Disaster Management is a flagship multi-disciplinary programme of the Loyola College of Social Sciences merging the disciplines of Social Work and Disaster Studies.

The Post Graduate course leading to the award of the Master of Social Work in Disaster Management by the University of Kerala is spread over four semesters. The academic work is a package of theory papers and practicals, having two specializations – ‘Disaster Health’ and ‘Technologies for Disaster Management.’ The programme aims at moulding professionals for intervention at times of disasters and equipping them with necessary knowledge and skills to engage with disaster risk reduction activities.

 The academic work is a package of the following components:

  • Nineteen Common Papers including Dissertation.
  • Concurrent Field Work: The components of concurrent fieldwork include (1) Bridge Course (2) Exposure Visits, (3) Concurrent Fieldwork Internships, (3) Specialized agency exposure, (4) Addon Certificate Courses (specialized skill-oriented short-term courses of prestigious institutions), (5) Walk with Experts, (6) Rural live-in camp, (7) Street Theatre Workshop, (8) PRA camp, (9) Other Programmes/Projects- contributing to/participating in programmes/conferences/seminars/workshops, (10) a viva voce at the end of each semester to evaluate fieldwork and comprehension
  • Two-Block Field Work Internships
  • Comprehensive Viva Voce

Teaching Hours and Transaction

Considering that professional development requires personal reflection, the program has a total of 2608 hours of instruction and fieldwork. The instructional hours are transacted by way of classroom lectures, guided reading sessions, assignment writings, seminars, group discussions, tutorials, role-play, case studies, field trips, field surveys, field action and computer classes. The instructional content is transacted by way of 5 papers each in the first and second semesters and 4 papers each in the third and fourth semesters. Semester IV also requires the learner to submit a Dissertation/Project and attend a comprehensive viva-voce. All semesters will feature concurrent fieldwork internships transacted concurrently, 14 hours per instructional week on Thursdays & Saturdays or Fridays and Saturdays. Semesters 2 and 4 will have Block fieldwork internships. An internship requires placement of students in an organization requiring a mandate of 24 days of internship, covering 192 hours.

Eligibility Criteria

All admissions are governed by the regulations, orders and rules of the University of Kerala. The eligibility for admission is a  graduation in any subject in the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Science, Oriental Studies and Commerce securing not less than 45% marks in Part III – Optional Subjects in the degree examination (including B Tech, MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BBA, and LLB) declared by the University of Kerala as equivalent there to.The applicants will be assigned 40 percent proportionate weightage for the marks secured in the qualifying examination (approximated weightage of 40% subject to a maximum of 30 marks) and a valid score (30%) from the University Entrance Examination and 30% for Group Discussion and Interview (approximated to 15% and 15%=30%) to be completed for being eligible for admission.

Relaxation in Marks in the Qualifying exam

  • For SC/ST candidates: the minimum marks 35%.
  • SEBC category: a relaxation of 2% marks from the prescribed minimum is allowed.
  • Persons with Disability: a relaxation of 5% marks from the prescribed minimum is allowed.

Claim for Reservation

  • Reservation under community quota (Catholic) will have to produce community certificate from the concerned Revenue Authority.
  • Reservation under SC/ST should obtain Caste/Community Certificate from Thahalsidar.

If the seats reserved for SC/ST candidates are not filled by them after an opportunity is given by notifying the vacancies through media, those seats may be filled up by candidates belonging to OEC and in their absence candidates belonging to SEBC.The seats that still remain unavailed will go to the open Merit Quota.

After the admission procedures, if admitted, the student is required to enroll himself/herself in the college on the same day itself, by producing the required certificates and paying the tuition fee and the special fees in full.

The certificates to be produced in original are:

  • Transfer Certificate
  • Conduct Certificate
  • Degree/Provisional Certificate
  • Marklist of graduation
  • Migration & Eligibility Certificates (if the candidate is from another university)
  • Income Certificate (fee concession candidates only).

N.B.

  • Those who are employed must produce a sanction of leave and relieving certificate from the employer, besides those mentioned above.
  • As only regular, full time students are admitted to the above courses, no student is permitted to register for any other examination or course of studies, even part-time, until the course is completed.
