Loyola in the Company of Friends(LITCOF)

L’ITCOF – ‘Loyola In The Company Of Friends’ – the transformed ‘reading club’, is an interdepartmental collaboration of five departments of Loyola College of Social Sciences – Sociology, Social Work, Personnel Management, Counselling Psychology, and Disaster Management. It is an extra-curricular space where students can participate in discussions on topics of utmost pertinence and express themselves accordingly. L’ITCOF showcases a spectrum of activities where students can come together and pave the way for their future endeavours. At the outset itself, L’ITCOF has been aiming at building a praxis for the classroom academics. It runs after the renowned Loyolite pedagogy of ‘Engaged Knowledge Building’. It provides multidimensional skills for its members such as writing, reading, communication, discussing, sharing, painting etc. The goal of L’ITCOF is to make the students aware of their surroundings and make them fit for any impediment they may face once they leave Loyola. L’ITCOF members organise at least one activity in a month to meet the goals. Student coordinators Arun Vincent J and Maneesha S, executive committee members, staff coordinator Dr Sunil Kumar P., and staff member Fr. Saji S.J. are involved in planning and implementing the activities.

Chimizhu September 30th 2020

“It is impossible to think about the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. It is impossible for a bird to fly on only one wing.”- Swami Vivekananda

Women as a ‘category’ or as a ‘group’ in comparison to ‘men’ have been relegated to margins due to systemic and structural discrimination within the society, irrespective of their hierarchical status, ranking or background, subjected to violence within the public and private spaces, they are being doubly discriminated and denied of the basic rights and are often oppressed by norms, culture and customs in a male-dominated world where capitalism and globalization commodify and objectifies women. Under different economic conditions, and under the influence of specific historical, cultural, legal and religious factors, marginalization is one of the manifestations of gender inequality. In other words, women may be excluded from certain jobs and occupations, incorporated into certain others, and marginalized in others. In general, they are always marginalized relative to men, in every country and culture.  In this scenario, the ninth session of LITCOF was conducted on 28h October 2020 through the online platform, Zoom. The topic for the day was ‘ആനുകാലിക ഇന്ത്യയിൽ സ്ത്രീകൾ നേരിടുന്ന വെല്ലുവിളികൾ- ചരിത്ര സാമൂഹിക തലങ്ങളുടെ വിശകലനം’.

  • Rebuilding Kerala – A Discussion (30/10/2018)
    • The first initiative of L’ITCOF was to hold a discussion on ‘Rebuilding Kerala after the floods’. L’ITCOF, being an association to broaden the student’s perspective, it was no surprise our first gathering would be of something immediate and dire of nature. Students of various departments joined in as we discussed the disaster management happened before, during and after the floods. As the discussion continued each and every student at the gathering began to chime in their valid opinions and observations. On the whole, the first L’ITCOF initiative was a grand success which built confidence in the L’ITCOF committee. (A link will provide short video or photos)
  • Ponmudi Trip – Photography and Travelogue competition(6/11/2018)
    • After the “Rebuilding Kerala” discussion, it was time to begin the proper inception of L’ITCOF. After learning that the floods’ main reason was ignorance towards nature, we decided to hold our second programme in the midst of nature. We took L’ITCOF to Ponmudi, a hill station in the heart of Thiruvananthapuram. We held a photography and travelogue competition to hearten our members. As we went downhill back to our homes, our hearts were loved and  our minds revitalized.(A link will provide short videos or Photos)
  • Chimizhu – A monthly student publication
    • Chimizhu is a monthly publication to elevate the intellectual capabilities of our members. Every month a particular subject is handpicked as the theme for Chimizhu. Short stories, poems and abstracts of the members are published. (PDF version of the published issues should be provided)(Provision for receiving write ups for Chimizhu)
  • Economic Reservation Policy (29/01/2019)
    • It was an occasion to hear an eminent expert from the economics. An interactive session was held on the constitutional amendment for providing reservation for the economically backward sections of forwards communities in the month of January. Prof. Mary George, economist, led us to the underlining currents of the topic.
